What You Should Know about 25-Year Shingles

When you have a new roof installed, one of the decisions you must make is the type of roofing material you will use. One of the most commonly chosen are asphalt shingles, which are typically referred to as 25-year shingles. But what exactly is meant by “25-year shingle” and what should you know about this type of roofing material before you agree to an installation?

This is the topic of an article by home-improvement entrepreneur Randal Brooks entitled 25-Year Traditional Roof Shingles. In this article, Brooks provides information about the following topics:

  • Life Expectancy: These shingles generally last between 15 and 30 years. Their lifespan is dependent on weather conditions, UV sunlight, roof pitch and other factors related to your home.
  • Composition: Asphalt compositions shingles are made of fiberglass, petroleum and ceramic granules. Today’s shingles use far less asphalt than older shingles and though they are lighter and thinner, are just as durable.
  • Warranties: There are two types of warranties you should look for. The manufacturer’s warranty will cover defects in the shingles themselves. A manufacturer’s warranty of more than 15 years will typically require you to have purchased upgraded materials or systems. The contractor’s warranty will typically cover deficiencies in workmanship.
