What Is a Derecho Anyway?

If you ask the average American on the street what a derecho is, chances are they won’t know. However, derechos pose a threat for injuries and property damage nearly everywhere in the United States. The Weather Channel has started using this term more frequently and if there is a warning for a derecho in your area, you may want to secure your outdoor property as well as your home.

In the following article, Chris Dolce of The Weather Channel explains in detail the devastating force of this type of weather event. Think it’s not something you need to worry about? In 2012, three derechos struck Illinois. One, in June of that year, affected the Chicago area, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage. A Derecho is defined as: a line of intense, widespread, and fast-moving windstorms and sometimes thunderstorms that moves across a great distance and is characterized by damaging winds.

If a derecho strikes your area, there is a chance that your roof may be damaged by the heavy wind gusts, falling trees, flying debris or even lightning. It is extremely likely that your homeowners insurance will cover the damages caused by these storms so it is a very good idea to get your roof inspected as soon as possible after the storm. If you wait too long, it may be impossible to prove that the damage was caused by the weather event.
