The Better Business Bureau Warns Against Spring Scams

For as long as people have been walking the earth, there have been con artists among us. These people prey upon the trusting nature of those who are in need of a service or are willing to help. By knowing what to look for, you can protect yourself against falling for the ploys enacted by these criminals.

The Chicago office of the Better Business Bureau recently published an information piece entitled Protect Yourself from Springtime Scams. In it, they list the three most prevalent scams orchestrated by con-artists in the spring season. These include:

  • Alarm System Scams: These scam-artists prey upon homeowners’ fears of burglary. They will search neighborhoods for homes with alarm-system warning signs and will knock on the door stating they are there to check the system. Once inside, they will try to convince the homeowner that an upgrade is necessary into order to protect their home and family. If they succeed, they will actually switch the alarm system to their own company’s system and sign the homeowner into a lengthy contract.
  • Storm Chasers: Springtime is rife with roof-damaging severe weather, including hailstorms. Con artists representing fly-by-night roofing companies will go door-to-door in affected areas offering roof-repair services. They will frequently ask for a deposit or payment-in-full before beginning the job and will then either never return or will do an extremely shoddy job before disappearing into the night. This leaves the homeowners out large sums of money with no way to recoup their losses.
  • Magazine Sales Scams: Door-to-door salespeople offer to sell magazine subscriptions. They take your money and the magazine never comes or you discover that you paid much more than the going rate.

If hail or other weather-related events have damaged your roof, it is always best to call contracting companies directly, rather than accepting offers from door-to-door salespeople. You will want to be certain that you are dealing with an established, local company such as Baltic Home Improvements so that you can research their standing with the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List before agreeing to give them your hard-earned money.

Be sure to contact us with all of your roofing needs. We will be happy to provide you with information, an assessment of your damage and an obligation-free quote for our services. If the damage is covered by your home insurance, we also offer claims assistance to make the process as easy as possible for you. Learn more by contacting us today.
