Most people really enjoy the natural light that skylights can bring to any room. Unfortunately, many are afraid that having a skylight installed on their own roof will lead to problems with leaks or higher energy costs. While skylights of the past often did create such problems, today’s skylights are designed to eliminate these downfalls.

This is the subject of an article published by Velux®, Baltic Home Improvements’ preferred vendor of skylights. This article, entitled Modern Skylight Benefits Outweigh Old Fears, explains why today’s skylights are energy efficient and, when installed correctly, not likely to leak.

Some notable points made in the article include:

  • They can improve air quality by venting out odors and warmer air that is carrying volatile organic compounds and other airborne pollutants.
  • Properly positioned skylights are green-positive as they provide natural light instead of requiring that you use electric lights.
  • Most of today’s skylights are ENERGY STAR® certified. They are frequently made with dual pane glass that is argon gas-injected.
  • You can purchase skylights made with low-e glass that block UV rays so that they natural light will not fade furniture or cause a high increase in heat in the summer months.
  • Skylights are currently designed to be leak-proof when installed correctly by a qualified contractor.
