How to Keep Your Driveway from Being a Safety Hazard this Winter

As anyone who lives in the Chicago area knows, winters can be brutal. One common cause of injuries in the winter is falls on icy walkways and driveways. Fortunately, there are preventive steps you can take to minimize how hazardous your driveway and walkways are.

Larry Lee, of Scott-Lee Guttering in St. Louis, recently published a very informative article entitled Winter Safety Tips For Your Home. In this article, Lee gives several tips that we found to be useful. Among them are:

  • Clear snow from your driveway and walkway as soon as possible after it falls. Delaying this action can lead to the formation of ice and make the job more difficult.
  • Keep your gutters clear of debris so they can channel water from your roof and away from your driveway or sidewalks.
  • Keep plenty of bags of salt and sand handy. If you run out after a large snow storm, stores may be sold out.
  • Make sure you have a quality snow shovel and ice breaker on hand ahead of time.
  • Do not shovel snow into high piles close to your driveway or sidewalk. As they melt in the sun, they can lead to the formation of a layer of ice.

If your gutters are clogged, damaged or pulling away from your house, you risk more than just damage to your soffit and fascia; you may also end up with uncontrollable ice issues on your walkways and driveway. This is why it is always a good idea to have your gutters cleaned before winter hits and, if damage does occur, that you have it dealt with promptly when the weather clears up again.
