Hail storms caused more than $1 billion in damages in Illinois between 2008 and 2012. Fortunately, your home insurance company is designed to provide coverage for the damage these hailstones can inflict on your roof, siding and windows. However, many people do not understand their coverage and have questions about it. This is the subject of an article by the Consumer Insurance Guide entitled What the hail? Misconceptions about homeowner’s insurance and hail damage.
This article states that all home insurance policies cover hail damage, the difference you will find in various policies is in just how much coverage you can get.
The most important consideration for many homeowners has to do with the policy’s deductible. You should make sure that your deductible is low enough that you can easily afford to cover it. For example, a policy with a $2,000 deductible will cost less than one with a $500 deductible, but if shelling out $2,000 for hail or other damage will cause you great financial hardship, you are much better off with a low deductible policy.
The article further advises that if your property is struck by hail, you will need to have it looked at by a professional to assess whether or not there was any damage. Hail does not always cause damage, but when it does, the damage is not always easily detectable simply by looking at your roof while standing in your yard. The damage may not lead to leaks for two or three years, and by that time, it will be too late to file a claim.
When hiring a professional to perform a roof inspection, be sure that you get a detailed report in writing. Pictures are also important if you know that you will be filing an insurance claim.
The article also strongly advises that you review your home insurance policy every few years. While you may have coverage, if the value of your home has increased significantly since you purchased it, that coverage may be too low. Finally, the good news: Your homeowners insurance rates will not increase based on a claim filed for hail damage.
